Rep. Valadao has only been a member of Congress since January, but it appears he has already joined the ranks of those who come to Washington primarily to advance their own financial interests.
In June, Rep. Valadao successfully offered an amendment to an appropriations bill that would effectively stall, if not end, the prospect of completing additional segments of California’s high-speed rail project. The congressman’s family operates Valadao Dairy, which owns hundreds of acres of land along one of the proposed rail lines, and would face reduced property values as a result of the project.
When Rep. Valadao offered his amendment and advocated for its adoption, he failed to inform his House Appropriations Committee colleagues of his financial interest in its passage. In July, CREW asked the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate Rep. Valadao.
