Rep. DesJarlais, a licensed physician, appears to have some confusion about Tennessee’s prohibition on doctors engaging in sexual relationship with their patients.
Prior to his election to Congress, the Tennessee Republican engaged in inappropriate relationships with two patients. In one case, Rep. DesJarlais — who was married at the time — urged his patient to get an abortion. When news reports revealing the affair broke and quoted from a transcript of a telephone call between Rep. DesJarlais and the patient, the congressman denied having recorded the call, directly contradicting sworn testimony from his 2001 divorce.
