Supreme Court reviews Jefferson ruling
By Staff, WAFB
May 18, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WAFB) - The United States Supreme Court could rule Monday whether to drop 14 of 16 counts of bribery against former U.S. Congressman William Jefferson.
Jefferson is asking the high court to review a lower court's decision rejecting arguments that prosecutors improperly presented information about his legislative duties to a grand jury, in violation of a constitutional separation of powers clause.
Jefferson is facing a 16-count federal indictment that accuses him of funneling bribes to family-owned businesses in exchange for helping companies get business deals in West Africa.
Federal agents found $90,000 in his freezer a few years ago.
The former nine-term congressman is scheduled to stand trial June 2nd in federal court in Virginia.
It's a trial that could send him to jail for the rest of his life.
